SHIPPING CLAIMS. THE NOTICE TO AUSTRALASIAN OWNERS.
A SERIOUS POSITION. By Iclegrapb. — Press Association. — Copyright. (Received September 4, 10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Regarding the Liverpool and London Steamship Protection Associations refusing renewals to Australian and New Zealand Steamship Companies, the secre- J tary of the Steamship Owners' Association states that the Australian tonnage excluded from the benefits of the association is approximately 390,000 tons, so that the liability transferred to Australian and New Zealand shipowners is £3,507,000. This risk of such magnitude is regarded with the gravest concern by all interested. Unfortunately, the tonnage owned in Australia and New Zealand is too limited to warrant the formation of similar clubs here.* The decision has placed members of the association in an extremely serious position, and the whole matter will have to become the subject of the most careful consideration. The Liverpool and London Association gave notice to the Australasian owners of its intention to refuse renewals of entries, as the claims from Austialasia were far in excess of contributions received.
