Tilley's private track at Fordell on Friday last, Frisco brok3 down, and his turf career has closed. He won the New Zealand Cup two years ago, and made his last appearance in the race named last November. He may take up stud duty in the Marlinborough district. • A. Oliver delayed his departure for 'Australia, to ride Mr. "Preston's" horses o,t the Marton meeting. Owing to unfavourable weather the bearers of the French-grey jacket were not seen out. Oliver came down to Wellington yesterday, and left for Sydney in the afternoon. The' sum of £1400 will be distributed id stakes at the annual meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club, to be held at Clareville on 9th and 10th November next. Tho principal events are the County Cup, of 200 soys, and the Clareville Handicap, of 150 soys. Other open evsnts are the Railway Handicap, of 100 soys; Telegraph Handicap, of IQO soys; and Carterton Welter, of 80 iBOVS. " Sid Reid, who has been on the retired list since the Wellington Summer Meeting, will make his reappearance in the Baddlo at Maridnborough on Ist October. During the past twenty years "The Spade" has attended race meetings held .under most unpleasant weather condittons at Otaki, Masterton, the snow meeting of the Woodlands Hunt Club, held at Dannevirke about five years ago, and Ash hurst, a couple of seasons back; but it is doubtful whether the conditions provtxiling at any of the gatherings iiamecA were as bad as the weather experienced at Marton on Wednesday last. Ownen* and trainers are reminded that nominations for the annual meeting of the Lower Valley Jockey Club, to be held at Martinborough on 30th inst. and Ist October, close on Monday next with Mr. F. J. Read (secretary), Martinborough. The programme includes four open events, two hunters' steeplechases, two events for gentlemen riders, two hack hurdle handicaps, four hack handicaps, also a maiden hack race, and hack scurry. Mr. Read will be pleased to arrange accommodation for owners, trainers, and jockeys visiting Martinborough. The track, our correspondent states, .is in first-class condition at present. Aimwell, winner of the Electric Handi-. cap at the Marton meeting, was bred by his owner, Mr. W. Handley, by Soult— Gladys May, by Regel — May, and is therefore related to Regulation, Regalia, Regulus, and other well-known performers. The, two-yeaj-qld colt Odessa, by St. Ambrose — Crimea, will probably make his first appearance at tho Rangitikei jmeeting. Five New Zealand Cup candidates ■were seen ant on the first day of the Marton meeting. One of them (Sandstream) was successful, and has .incurred 51b penalty in the two miles handicap. The other Cup candidates that sported silk a.t Marton were King's Prize, Aberbrothock, Guiding Step, and Chauvelin. , Tangimoana, one of Mr. Buick's New Zealand Cup candidates, is being given long slow work at Awapuni. Reports from Christchurch state that Heorthen, runner-up in the New Zealand Ctip last year, is coming on nicely in her preparation for this year's bjg handicap. Mr, J. Ellis is • putting • Beiieform (Multiform— St. Ouida) to the stud this season, but may' race the horse again next year. " Provocation may maite his Australian racing d«but in the Chelmsford Stakes, a weight-for-age .event,, to be decided at the Tattertall's Club Meeting on xlth September. "Sentinel" states that the Dunedin Jockey Club has removed the disqualification imposed upon George Mason by the Taieri Amateur Turf Club in 1905. Mason came under the 'ban in connection with the horse Flying Spark, who has since won several races at unregistered meetings in Australia. Thirty-seven horses have survived the first acceptances for the N.Z. Cup. As noted elsewhere, Frisco, a former winner, has broken down, while other notable defections are Penates, Signor, Gwendolina, and Wet Day. The latter is the imported mare by Macintosh, and had received slight support in certain quarters. Mr. Moore s little good one, who got third in the big race last ! year, apparently has not got over the ' ill effects of the Australian trip. His presence in the field would have added considerably to the interest. The. with-, drawa' of Penates is hardly surprising, as the Reunalfs are not particularly partial to anything beyond ten furlongs. | Gwendolina had recent form to recommend her. There is ample material remaining in the race to make punters a bit bewildered. Downfall and Heor- | then, winner and runner-up respectively Hst year, hold their ground The former "is up 121b, and the Franks' maro 101b. Mr. Thos. Ray, who won a double at the Wairarapa Hunt Club meeting with Merrie Land, has been connected" with I the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club for «ver twenty years, and is still on' the executive of the olub named.
