PETONE AND HUTT ITEMS.
PRESENTATIONS. Prior to severing his connection with the Lower Hutt Borough Council's staff, Mr. Leo S. Curtis, who has been appointed assistant clerk at the Petone municipal office, wan presented by his fellow employees with a handsome travel-ling-bag*. Mr. P. R. Purser, Town Clork, in making the presentation, congratulated Mr. Curtis on his well-earned promotion. Membere of the St. Augustine's Young Men's Club gathered together last evening for the purposes of making a presentation to a fellow member (Mr. F. A. Mason), whose valuable services in helping to secure an up-to-dato clubroom they have been glad to recognise. The presentation, which took the form of a silver-mounted cigarette case and case of pipes, was made by the vicar (Rev. J. D. Russell). At the new State School, Petone, yesterday afternoon, Mi 1 . James Home, headmaster, made presentations to Mr. ' Bedingpeld and Misses Carter and Cook, all of whom hp,ve been promoted to positions in the new West-end School. Mr. Home remarked that Miss Carter had been about eighteen years in the Petone school. She was one of a number who had commenced as brilliant scholars in the school, become pupil teachers, and for years held prominent positions on the teaching staff. Mr. Arcus, Mr. Mason, Mr. Mothes, and Mis* Thomson were other instances. Mr. Home tendered his best thanks to the stalf for their loyalty in working cordially and with unanimity for the common good of tho school. Without this the school could not have attained the great success which has attended it. The Rev. A. Thomson, who was present, mentioned that he had been a member of the committee for twenty years, and stated that he could not remember any friction between the head teacher ana any member of the f-taff. Mr. Home then congratulated Mr. Bedingfield and Miss Cook on their promotion. Mr. M'Kenzie, chairman of committee, forwarded apologies for being unable to be present. " The "social" given by the Sisters of the Petone Good Templars Order last evening was a great success, close on a hundred persons bsing present. The hall and tables were nicely decorated, and everything went off without a hitch. Bros. Townsend and A. Parker acted as M.C.'s. The dance programme included two waltzes, schottische, barn-dance, and lancers. Skill competitions for prizes were won by Sis. Fuller and Bro. Lrndsay,; Songs were given by Sis. Fuller, Pomfrey, and Mill-ward, Bros. Robertson, Bonishie, Parker, Townsend ; duet, Sisters Millward ; recitation, Sis. Fuller and Parker, Bros. Delahunty, Price. Denby, and Townsend. Music was supplied by Sis. Armitage, Bro. Ballard, and Millward. Proceedings closed just before 1 a.m. This evening, in the Town Hall, Lower Hutt, Mrs. K. L. Stevenson, M.A., will under the auspices of the W.C.T.U., lecture on "The Going Woman." The public is invited.
