Miss Hume and Mr. J. M. Hume arrived by the Sydney boat to-day. The Adjutant-General (Colonel Tuson) returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Mr. Harry Price, of the firm of Messrs. H. Price and C 0.,, Wellington, leaves on Friday on a trip to the Old Country. Tho Hon. S. S. Joicey, son of Lord Dudley, arrived by. the Moana from Sydney this morning. His destination is Auckland. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie, who has been [on a visit to the Nelson and Marlborough districts, returned to Wellington last night. The Rev. Mr. Heron, of Cambridge, who has been appointed curate to the vicar of Petone, will take up his new duties in October. Among the passengers by the Moana from Sydney to-day were Messrs. S. C. Leary and R. Turnbull, returning from a visit to Australia. Mr. J. H. Richardson, Government Insurance .Commissioner, left by the Northern express to-day for/ Auckland on departmental -business. The friends of Mrs. E. Kennecty, late of Feilding, will bo sorry to hea-r that she has been advised to go under an operation at Dr. Savage s Hospital, Auckland. Dr. Sampson has resigned his position as house surgeon of the Gisborne Hospital. It is understood tljat ho has secured a good appointment in a mental hospital in Melbourne. Professor T. H. Laby, the newlyappointed Professor of Physics at Victoria College, did not arrive from Sydney to-day, as was expected, being detained there by an attack of influenza. Steps are being taken among the various cadet corps of New Zealand to make a presentation to Lieut. -Colonel Love day, who has had charge of them for some years past, and has now retired from the service. Mr. R. B. Magee, who has jus£ Been -transferred from the local Telegraph Office to Auckland, was on the eve of his departure presented with a handsome dressing-case, as a mark' of esteem by his fellow officers. The Acting-Premier (Hon. J. Carroll) is not only endeavouring to make arrangements to be present at the unveiling of the Tuahine lighthouse shortly, but hopes to be accompanied by several members of the Ministry, particularly the Hon. T. Mackenzie. Mr. iW. Recce, a member of the Christchurch Tramway Board, who has been on a nine months' trip to Europe and lAmerica, returned to Now Zealand by the iMoana to-day, accompanied by Mrs. Recce and his daughter. He leaves for the South to-morrow evening. The Minister for Education (Hon. G. Fowlds) left this morning for Pahiatua, where he will open the new District High School. On Tuesday next he^will open a new technical school at Hawera. Mr. W. H. Westbrooke, Inspector of Factories at Oamaru, has received notice of his transfer to Gisborne. His Excellency the Governor was at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting at Tfentham to-day, and he has also notified his intention of attending the race j ball at the Town Hall to-morrow night. 1 On Friday afternoon ho will preside at I the opening of the Presbyterian Orphanage at Brooklyn, and He will be present at the Savage Club's "ladies' night" on Saturday.
