UNEMPLOYED PRINTERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I notice in the list of unemployed handed to the Citizens' Committee, j that there are 20 pi inters among the number, and probably there are several others whose names have not as yet been, handed in. Seeing that these particular tradesmen have been thrown out of work mainly through the adjournment of Parliament, I think in all justice to them, Government should arrange to give them employment in their printing department, say, a fortnight on and a fortnight off, until Parliament is again 1 called together. It will be almost mv j possible to give work to all those apply1 ing on the proposed improvements to the Victoria College' grounds, and of the large number lequiring the means to earn a few pounds, perhaps, .printeis are the least qualified to undertake the work offering, as ' their calling renders them less fit physically to Undertake laborious ■work. with the same degree of success aa that which other tradesmen accomplish it. This is easily understood. their daily work is not strehuous, but tedious?. It doss not require much bodily exertion on their part to perform their duties, hence their inability to do heavier work at a short notice. Taking this fart into consideration, I would suggest that a deputation from <he Typographical Un- . 4on interview the Hon. Minister in j charge of the Government Printing Office, and sco if provision could not be v made to put the cornps., now out of work, on the staff. At the present time a large number of the permanent employees are engaged on various works, which keep them going a great portion of the year. Why not put extra hands on now, on these different works and get them completed earlier, and the additional work entailed by Parliament meeting later on would supply sufficient employment for all hands until Christmas time. — I am etc., CITIZEN. 9th July.
