An unknown merchantman collided with the second-cla: 3s cruiser Sappho (Commander 11. Christian) in the English Channel. The cruiser, which is of 3400 tons register and 7000 horse-power, and is attached to the Home fleet, was very severely damaged by the impact. She was towed into Dover in a sinking condition, and an attempt was then made to beach her. The attempt was not attended by complete success, as the leak was so great that the vessel had got very low in the water. All the menibers o-f the crew were saved. No tidings have yet been heard of the merchantman, which, it is supposed, was one of the Wilson Line's vessels. It is feared that she has sunk', THE MISSING STEAMER. DISAPPEARED IN A FOG. (Received June 21, 9 a.m ) LONDON, 20th June. The name of the beached cruiser is the some as that of the vessel which has disappeared —the Sappho, of Hull. The collision occurred in a fog. The Sappho, of Hull, belonged to T. iWilwin, Sorif-, and Co., and wa6 built in 1903. She was of 1694 tons, 282 ft long, 40ft beam, and 18ft sin depth, and sho wat> commanded by Captain J. Steele.
