PETONE.
Last night's; meeting of the Petone Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mf. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors R. W. Short, E. J. Southgate, H. Handing, J. Piper, H. O. Young, J. List, E. W. Jones, and W. Trueman. COOKERY. Messrs. Wright and Coy. advised the council that owing to the illness of Misa Lovell, the proposed cookery demonstrations at Petone would have to be abandoned. NAVAL CORPS. The Petone Naval Corps, through Cap. ! tain 0. V. Ellis, made ajjplication for a subsidy towards the upkeep of tho cutter belonging to the company. At various times the company, with its cutter, has rescued small craft from disaster. The matter was held over until consideration of the estimates. FOOTBALL. In reply to the council, the secretary of the Wellington Eutrby Union, stateed, in reference to the recreation ground, that the Petone Club's games in the. second round of the Eugby championship contest would bo played there. The secretary or the Wellington Football Association wrote enquiring on what terms the council would grant the Association the use of a ground on the reserve on or about the 26th June, when it was proposed to hold the representative fixture — Wellington v Taranaki. It was resolved to grant the necessary permission, the council to deduct the usual amount from the gate takings, the surplus to be equally divided < between the association and the council. A sixpenny charge was stipulated for. A COMPLAINT. Eeplying to a complaint from the council, the clerk of tho Hutt River Board, in quoting from tho consulting engineer's report, stated that in referonce to 'the erosion at the sanitary depot, tho recent protective works would in future safeguard the property. It, was decided to reply to the ooard to tho effect that the council did not agree with its explanation, and that tho erosion still continued. On the motion of Councillor Piper, i.fc was also decided to ask the member for the district to bring under tho notice of the Government the fact that areas of State-owned land adjacent to the river continued to be washed ay/ay, to the detriment of tho borough sanitary depot. THE WHARF. Intimation was received from the Harbour Board thai the cost of repairing the Petone Wharf, and laying down a lino of rails on the structure, would amount to £9800; tho question, however, had not yet been considered by members The engineer, the letter added, had been instructed to report on the subject of reclamation at Petone. It was decided, on Mr. Piper's initiative, to request the Harbour Board to proceed with all soeed with the alterations necessary to the wharf. BLOCKED LANE. According to the Gear Company, the reason of the blockage of Kelly's-lano was attributable to the Railway Department's failure to provide reasonable facilities for the handling of rollingstock at that point. The department was being urged l>y the company to have the line properly graded. It was resolved to forward this explanation on to tho Railway Department. GAS AGREEMENT. The proposed new gas agreement with the Lower Hntt Borough Council, as draftee 1 by Mr. E. C. Kirk (borough solicitor), was agreed to by the council. According to Mr. Kirk, the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. E. P. Bunny) had approved of a draft copy of tho agreement. In reply to a query by Councillor Piper, the Mayor assured councillors that the price would give a reasonable profit to the council, and enable the Petone consumers iv be supplied with gas without extra cost. If, nowever, added Mr. M'Ewan, the agreement had not been entered into, he questioned very much whether the council would have been able to supply gas to local residents at the same price. OFFER DECLINED. On behalf of the trustees of the Buick estate, the Public Trustee declined the council's offer of £350 for the purchase of the proposed high school site. Councillor List moved that tho section be acquired under the Public Works Act. The motion lapsed, being substituted by one moved by Councillor Piper, to the effect that a committee, consisting of the Mayor and Councillors Short, Harding, and the mover, be set up for the purpose of considering the best means of acquiring the land. The report will be brought down at tho noxf meeting of the council. ENGINEER'S REPORT. In his monthly rtport, the bor»ugh engineer (Sir. W. H. C«ek) statsd that it was his intention to form a raised path along the outer «dgß of th» Korokor* Domain-raasi, which w»ul«l doubtless b« greatly appreciated by persons having to pass along the road. In connection with the eastern drainage, right service connections had 1 been made vi Fourth-stieet and four to Government sections. The weather had allowpd the work to be carried along without delay, and should it still keep favourable he would be ready to start working in the formed streets. Provision wab being made for tho employment of an additional batch of six men. A iHcket-feticft, a flowor-bed, and pathway were being constructed around
the bond-store. Gifts of flowers for , this plot would be much appreciated. The report was adopted.
