THE POLICE FORCE.
INDICTED BY ME. ARNOLD. _ Speaking in the House of Representatives this afternoon, Mr. J. F. Arnold, Duneddn, made a strong indictment against the present condition of the police force. He declared that owing to scenes that had taken place in Wellington recently, grave dissatisfaction existed. He condemned the system of promotion at present iv force, and declared that constables were taken into the service without proper enquiries being made as to their previous reputation. He gave an instance where a, constable had been promoted to the position of sergeant, over the head of 233 seniors.
Messrs. A. L. Wilson advertise particulars of a sale of furniture they are holding in their rooms to-morrow ot 1.30, when they will sell on account of Mr. M Kenzie, the contents of his 6-roomed house, including a piano. The same afternoon they will offer four pianos by lending makers, Edison phonograph, complete, 12 x 10 stand camora, and- a lady's bicycle. The firm insert a preliminary notice of a furnituro salo they are to hold on Friday afternoon, commencing at 1.30, when they will sell on behalf of Mrs. Wwgley the contents of her sevenroomed lesidcnce, including Kirchner piano. 1 At the Viavi rooms, two "free health talks to women will bo given on Thursday and Monday next, at 3 p.m. each day. _ Mcssis. T. Konnedy Macdonald, Ltd., insert particulars in our auction columns of a salo of household furniture, extension dining tablo, theodolite, and 30 framed pictures, in their rooms, to-mor-row, at 1.30. The firm also insert full details of a sale of household furnituie, Sheraton drawing-room furniture, etc., contents of nine rooms, at the Family residence), 319, Wellington-terrace, close to Ghuznee-street, on Thursday naxt commencing at 1.30 o'clook. The furniture will be on view on Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 5, and on the morning of sale. At 2 o'clock to-morrow, at the Fruit Jixcnange, Messrs. George Thomas and Co. sell, without reserve, a large quantity of unclaimed merchandise, including crockery and earthenware, hardware, ship chandlery, churns, etc. Messrs. Thomson and Brown call attention to an auction sale to bo held at their rooms, Customhouse-quay, to-mor-row, when they will submit two sections being part section No. 6, Larnbton-quay haying a frontage of 39ft. Bin., and part • section No. 3, JBallanca-street, having a frontage of 35ft. by a depth of 75ft. To-morrow at 1 p.m., at the Fruit Hixcnange, Blair-street, Messrs. Thompson Bro-s , Ltd., will soil unreservedly, on behalf of Mr. W. B. Hardy, of the Ulackbndge Nurseries, a large quantity Of Hutt-grown nursery stock, including roses, carnations, veronicas, floworing and ornamental trees, shrubs, and plants, otc. A warning to owrfers of horses and •attle in the outlying, districts of the city is advertised by tho Town Clerk. Messrs J. H. Bethune and Co. announce that to-morrow, at 2.30 p.m., they are selling threo sections in Kolburne, having** ontages to Kelburne-parade, and to a right-of-way at tho end of Centralterrace. The sections will be sold either as a block or scparatoly. Messrs. Bertenshaw and Evenson announce in this issue that they will hold the weekly sale of horses to-morrow at 2 p.m. at Watt's Horse Bazaar, Dixonstreefc. The same firm have an announcement that they will not hold a sale at their mart on Thursday next.
