BISECTING THE BASIN RESERVE?
TO THB EDITOB. Sir, — In to-night's paper I read wifch interest your sub-leader in reference to the proposal to run the trams directly through the Basin Reserve. I would like to make a suggestion which, if acted upon, would effect this purpose, and yet not lessen the area of the Reserve. First of all the tram lines which are now laid down in Kent-terrace would require to be pulled up and laid down in Cambridge-terrace, and the tram lines could then be joined from Ade-laide-road straight through the Basin to these new lines, malting a much more direct route than at present. Next I would suggest that the present street on the eastern side of the Reserve be closed, and the properties fronting thereon be purchased and together with the street thus closed thrown into the Reserve. With the exception of St. Mark's Church corner the Reserve would st;ll be rectangular, and of scarcely less area than at present. The portion of tlie Reserve on the western side of the tram lines could then be cut up into building lots and sold, and the money obtained therefrom applied towards purchasing the properties on the eastern side above mentioned. — I am, etc., J. R. S. 17th May. !
