Mr. -A. R. Hislop, general secretary for the New Zealand Institute of Marine Engineers, returned from Dunedin tins morning. Mr. Donald M'Lean, the well-known Wellington contractor, who went to Sydney by the Warrimoo last Friday week, returned by that vessel this afternoon. True to prediction by the Official Meteorologist, a blustering westerly, of an Ant-arctic type, threshed Wellington last night, and drove rain through many a defective roof or window. The rainfall was only 17 points, but each point was well sheeted home. The average velocity of the gale was 37 miles an hour for the twenty-four hours preceding 9 a.m. to-day, but there were odd gusts with nearly double that smiting force. This unruly visitor was "Massey," in the nomenclature of Mr. Wragge. It was a case of a half-inch down for the barometer, but the glass soon rose. Luckily for New Zealand Mr. Wragge's "Millar" went astray at Bea somewhere, and lost its bearings. This was to be a frightful visitation, but Mr. Wragge has other stormy petrels of his "tempestuous ministry hurtling along somewhere in Antarctic or far western seas. They may come — and they may not. When many petrels are forecast^ some may come home here to roost fot- awhile.
