ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO ROB

VERDICT OF GUILTY. The jury in the assault case reported* on page 7 of this issue returned in the Supreme Court at 2.45 p.m. to-day with a verdict of guilty of an assault with intent to rob. Williams, one of the three accused men, asked for permission to call witnesses as to his character. His Honour granted the request. The prisoner called Mrs. Mills, but that lady was not present in court. Mr. Myers (to Williams) : Any evidence of character you may bring ap- ! plies only to New Zealand ? — Yes, sir. Williams then called a young girl, who said she had known him for some ironths, and found him an honest man. His Honour then ordered the prisoners Williams, Thomas, and Trainor i to stand down till 10.30 a.m. to-morrow.
