MINING CONFERENCE.
— i CLOSE OF WAIHI SITTINGS. [BT TEIEGBArH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WAIHI, 6lh May. The Conference of Mining Inspectors concluded its sittings to-day. Some very important matters in connection with the welfare of the mining industry were discussed. A proposed Bill to rectify anomalies in the Mining Act vras discussed at considerable length, and certain proposals were made. Suggestions from various miners' associations were considered, and certain recommendations were made in connection therewith. A long discussion took place on a proposal to inaugurate a goldminers' relief fund, and sympathy was expressed with such proposal. Prior to the conclusion of the conference an expression of regret was made regarding- the loss to the Mines Department of the services of Mr. T. H. Hamer, formerly Undor-Secretary for Mines, who left for England to take a position on the staff of the High Commissioner for New Zealand. Due appreciation was also paid to the services rendered to the Mines Department by Mr. R. Tonnant, who recently retired from the position of Inspector of Mines for the West Coast by reason of his having reached the age limit. ' The conference concluded \vith a vote of thanks to the president (the Hon. R. M'Kenzie), whose practical knowledge of mining was of great assistance.
