At a meeting of the Southland 'Executive of the Farmers' Union the following (among otlier) remits to be submitted to the annual conference were received : — That a protest be entered against tha alteration in the size of grain sacks. That strong exception be taken to tha, action of the Southland Acclimatisation Society in securing protection of hares.. That imported timber be placed on tha free list, and no distinction be made ia railway charges as between imported and New Zealand timber. That steps be taken to secure the iirw migration of suitable farm servants, especially ploughmen. That first-class railway tickets at second-class rates be allowed to farmers attending the conference. That when a valuation is being made a valuer should bo appointed by the farm, ers to act in conjunction with the Gov* ernment valuer. That taxation on land and on mone» lent on land be put on a more equitable basis. One branch will eubmit a motion re« gretting the Dreadnought action with* out ~B rst consulting Parliament. Tha executive will submit that tha contract system of public works be re* verted to as more satisfactory than tha co-operative system. That, injustice is caused by taxation of growing flax. That a protest be entered against tha continual increase of valuations of un. improved rural lands. That the Government be urged ,Un amend the law so as to enable 6ver« settler to have the option of acquiring the freehold of lands for settlement lands.
