In the S.M. Court yesterday afternoon, the Truant Inspector, Mr. Dineen, proceeded against a number of parents on charges of having failed to send their children to school the required number of times. The Inspector stated that two of the children concerned, aged thirteen and eleven respectively, were now only in the first and second standards. Fines of 10s and 7s costs were inflicted in each case. ' In a case in which an elderly woman was charged with being found on licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order, a peculiar point was raised. The evidence showed that the woman had her arm through the bar window whilst standing on the road, endeavouring to hand a coin to the barmaid. The question was raised as to whether the defendant was actually " on the premises " ; and as the magistrate considered there was some doubt on the subject, he gave the accused the benefit. Another case has been set down for hearing at the next sitting of the District Court to be held here on 28th May. Hugh Long, butcher, is claiming from Max Oscar Aronsten the sum of £499 on a statement of accounts between the parties in connection with a butchering business carried on in Masterton for some time past.
