SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.
RECORDS AT SYDNEY OBSERVATORY. CENTRE PROBABLY 1 AT THE ' PHILIPPINES. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. SYDNEY, 29th April. A very severe earth tremor was registered by the seismograph at the Observatory shortly before midnight on the 27th inst. It was preceded by two smaller tremors. The maximum amplitude was 15.8 millimetres (.621046in.). Large waves continued for nearly five minutes. Some of the series of suceeding waves reached an amplitude of 6 millimetres (.23622in). The epicentrum of the earthquake was 2000 or 3000 miles north from Sydney, probably in the seismic zone embracing the Philippines and surrounding islands.
