AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
TROPHY PRESENTATIONS. Yesterday Afternoon a number of amateur athletic enthusiasts met at the Hot-el Windsor, the occasion being the presentation of medals won at the provincial and New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championship. Dr. Newman presided. On behalf of the athletic bodies, Mr. J. H. Pollock extended to Dr. Newman congratulations on the result of the Mayoral contest. He felt sure that the doctor would look after their interests well. Messrs. E. B. Vance and J. E. Fitzgerald also made appreciatory references to the interest taken in athletics by Dr. Newman. In responding, Dr. Newman said that he felt he owed his election to the loyal way in which sports' bodies had supported him. He had taken -a great interest in in athletics for a long time, and not merely for election purposes. (Hear, hear.) He was grateful to tho young men who had voted for him, and if he had given them friendship when they wanted it, they had given it to him at the time of the election, and that right loyally. Dr. Newman then presented the medals, offering in each case, a few words of congratulation. Following were the trophy winners: — Provincial championships 100 yards. — F. W. B. Goodbeherei 220 Yards, W. A. Woodger; 440 Yards, J. Wilton; 880 Yards, M. D. Mulcahy ; Mile, M.D. Mulcahy ; High Jump, A. Evenson ; 120 Yards Hurdles, A. Evenson ; Long Jump, H. H. Dawson. New Zealand championships. — 100 Yards, W. A. Woodger; 220 Yards, W. A. Woodger 5. 440 Yards, J. Wilton (Ist), W. G. Harding (2nd) ; Pole Vault, L. M'Kay ; Three Mile Walk, P. J. Fitzgerald ; 120 Yards Hurdles, (2nd), A. Evenson ; High Jump (2nd), A. Evenson ; 880 Yards (2nd), W. G. Harding. Mr. S. Bridge moved a vete of thanks to the old members of the association who had set such a splendid example, and had won the shield for Wellington three years ago. This was carried. A presentation of a framed photograph was made to Mr. S. Bridge, by Mr. Woodger, on behalf of the team. Dr. Newman stated that they would probably be sending a team from New Zealand to Australia for the championships. He therefore recommended training. A vote of thanks was accorded Dr. Newman for presiding.
