BOOTMAKERS' CLAIMS.
4s More wages and less hours are the principal points in the claim of Wellington bootmaker which will be heard next month. A 44-hour week (instead of 45 hours), and a minimum of Is 4d per hour for men (instead of Is) is claimed, and female workers who have served four years and upwards claim 52s 6d ; but girls who work waxed thread machines claim £2 10s. The workers also claim that employment of apprentices at finish Nig and benching shall be compulsory, lto is sought that no employer shall be allowed to introduce piecework or any bonus system during the currency of the award. Preference of employment is desired for" all members of tho New Zealand Federated Boot Trade Union, and, on the part of the workers, preference of service shall be given to members of the Employers' Federation.
