WORLD'S SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHELCH ASSISTS WEBB'S TRAINING. After superintending tne training of his old time rival, George Whelch, against Fogwell, with such a successful result, W. Webb, who has been matched to row R. Arnst for the chatapionship of the world, has returned to Wanganul from Akaroa in the very best of health and spirits, says Victor, in the Wanganui Herald. The ex-champion declares himself as well as he looks, and is very pleased and grateful to those backers who have given him a second opportunity against Arnst. Webb has made arrangements that Whelch shall act as his pacemaker, while Joe Green, the exchampion's former pacemaker, is to assist his work. The Wanganui oarsman sold his new boat while in the South, and it is understood a new one has been ordered from C. Nielson. Regarding the kite Whelch-Fogwell race, Webb informed the Herald representative that, though he fancied Whelch not a little, the people behind the Australian were i very confident. Up to the half-distance it was a good struggle, but when Whelch made his effort, he simply went away from his rival, who, to keep himself ahead in the first stages, had apparently rowed himself out. Fogwell's friends anticipated that their man could hold Whelch comfortably for the first mile and a half, but events proved they had misjudged the capabilities of both men, the Australian stopping before reaching that distance, while Whelch went out strongly to win. The result of the race was a genuine surprise to Fogwell and his party, who had not hesitated to back their judgment. Whelch's win, said Webb, was a very popular affair.
