[BY TEtEGKAPH — l'BEflS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, This Day. A fire last night started in somo stables, and attacked an adjoining block of shops fronting Station-street. Tho back portions of the shops ignited, but the brigade succeeded in beating out the flames. The fire spread from shed to shed, and cleared away a lot of old buildings, which were a menace to the town. The stables were owned by a syndicate. They were insured for £400 in the Commercial Union office. Fitzpatrick's billiard saloon (damage £90 only) was insured for £400 in tho London and Lancashire offipe. At last the "long lost DominionSccuts " have been officially found, and--the weary wanderers' heads may rest upon the broad bosom of the Defence Council. The Scouts have been placed i-i the volunteer iold, and the incredulous may seek confirmation of the fact h> this week's Gazette. Ihe full text of the record is worth reproduction after the fierce and lengthy controversy that v as. once provoked by this subject. The Gazette says :: — *' Services of volunteer coips accepted. Defence Office, Wellington, 13th March, 1909. His Excellency the Governor has been pleased* to accept, in accordance with section 45 (a) of the Defence Act, 1908, the services of the undermentioned volunteer corps — the Dominion Scouts — with headquarters at Wellington. Date of acceptance, 11th March, 1909. J. G. Ward, Minister of Defence." In Messrs. W H. Turnbull and Co.'s change advertisement this week are given details of a sound central city investment ; also particulars relating to a large house in Hobson-street. Messrs. T. Kennedy Macdonald, Ltd., report the sale of a number of sections in I the Crofton Downs Estate. Tho firm I advertise that pl*ns with upset prices can jbe obtained on application to them.
