* ' WOOL AND SKIN SALES. The Wellington brokers held their fortniphtlj wool and skin sales yesterday. Prices For wool were on a par with those of last sales, and in some instances slightly over. Skins were firm, but hides were easier by fully id to Id per lb. Tallow sold at full prices. Prices realised wore as follow: — Wool.— Crossbred fleece, 5d to 6|d per lb ; best lambs, 7d to 7|d ; medium lambs, Sgd to 6jd ; pieces and bellies, 2d to 4d ; locks, l^d to 2^d. Skins. — Fine crossbreds, 6d to 7|d per lb ; crossbreds, 5d to 6id ; dead skins, 3d to sgd ; dead hoggets, 3d to 4£d ; green pelts, 2s 6d to 3s 6d each ; lamb skins, 2s 6d to 3s 6d ; lamb pelts, Is to Is 9d ; green akins, Is 9d to 3s 2d. Tallow. — Firm. Parcels, in shipping order, £23 10s to £24; tins, £18 to £21 103. ; rough fat, £10 to £14. Horsehair, Etc. — Is 'to Is 4d per- lb. Horns, 5s to 16s per hundred. Cowtails, Is 3d to Is 6d per dozen. Hides.-— Ox hide 3 (heavy), 6|d to 7£d per lb ; ox hides (medium), 5d to 6|d ; ox hides (light), 4Jd to 6d ; cow hides, 5d to s|d ; cut and slippy hides, 2d to sd ; stag hides, 2£d to 4id; bull hides, 2d to 4id ; calf, b*3t, 6|d to 7d ; calf, medium, 5d to s|d; calf, cut and slippy, 3d to 4d. Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile iAprency Company, Limited, have received tho following cablegram their London house under Friday's* date :—"Woo: — "Wool — As compared with previous sales, closing rates values for certain leading descriptions now rule as under: — Fine greasy crossbred, i 10 to 15 per cent, higher ; lambs, 5 per j cent, higher ; greasy merino super, 5 per cent, higher ; coarse greasy crossbred, 5 per cent, higher ; crossbred slipe, 5 to 74 per cent, higher ; scoured crossbred. ?i por cent, higher ; merino scoured, 7i to 10 per cent, higher : greasy merino medium, 10 per cent, higher. Tlie outlook is encouraging. During the past series 183,000 bales were sold, 69,000 being taken for the Continent, and 18,000 for America : 13,000 bales have been held over. The saies closed strong. Frozen meat — Mutton and lamb are id, and beef ad per lb lower. The market is dull, with a downward tendency."
A report reaches us from a wellauthenticated source that on Monday last tbe passengers for Auckland by the express on the Main Trunk line received j a great scare when descending the Spiral, j I:, is asserted that the train travelled J down the incline at such a rate that the occupants of the carriages were thrown oft their seats. The maximum speed J allowed is 25 miles an hour. The express | was about two hours late at Raurimu, but it reached Auckland only twenty minutes behind time. From what we have learned, it would seem to be a matter ior official enquiry. An agreement between the Wanganui Gas Stokers', Trimmers', and Cokers' Industrial Union and Ihe Wanganui Borough Council has been filed with Mr. Stubbs, Registrar, Supreme Court. The agreement provides for an eight-hour shift, payment to leading stokers at therate of 10s per shift, and- to ordinary stokers of 9s 6d. The agreement contains, inter alia, a preference clause for the employment of union members, and Stipulates that the weight of coal per charge must not exceed 2^cwt. Ladies arc invited to attend two health talks to be given in tho Viavi rooms, Bank N.S.W. Chambers, Lambton-quay, on Monday and Thursday afternoon next. Persons wishing to take shares in tho proposed new issue of the Colonial Cooperative Building Society, of Wellington, are asked, to read an advertisement by the society in another column. Tho new Anglican Church at Wadestown will be consecrated by the Lord Bishop to-morrow, at 11 a.m. The name approved by the bishop is St. Luke's. The usual Sunday evening services will be held at New Century Hall to-morrow evening when demonstrations of psyohometry will be given after the lecture; »lso full arrangements will be made for tho holding of the thirty-eighth annual conference of the New Zealand National Association of Spiritualists, to be held in Wellington during Easter week.
