~» A new agreement between the Australasian Steamship Owners and the Fed>erated Seamen's Union becomes operative on Ist April next. The scale of wages remains the same, but concessions have been made as to overtime and holidays. nnen a vessel is employed on an excursion on a holiday an extra day's sea pay per man will 'be paid if so employed, or time off allowed at the home port as an equivalent. When sailors and stokehold hands are worked on any of the holidays in any place where a ship can, safely li© and discharge or load her cargo payment will be made at the rate ofi Is 3d per hour for cargo work, and Is per hour for other ship's work for the actual time worked. In construing this clause the allowance contemplated under the foregoing clauses must be kept in mind. When a vessel proceeds to sea on a holiday the sailors and stokehold hands are entitled to one extra day's sea pay. If, in addition, they work in port on the holiday, they will be entitled to payment at the overtime rate, which, together with the. aiaresaid extra day's pay, must not exceed a maximum of as. Practically the same conditions apply to Sunday work — sailing or working on that day.
