ALLEGED NUISANCE AT ISLAND BAY.
♦ ■ A CORPORATION OFFICER IMPEACHED. At last night's meeting of the City Council the Public Health Committee reported that in their opinion a serious nuisance existed in connection with a cesspool on premises at Island Bay. This was reported on adversely by Mr. Pringle in October last, but was not before the committee. The district health officer | had since reported that the nuisance existed, and recommended that action be taken under Section 56 of the Public Health Act, 1908, for its suppression, and the committee had given instructions accordingly. The committee regretted that the chief sanitary inspector at the time the nuisance was brought under his notice did not have a thorough inspection made of the premises. In the course of discussion several councillors declared that there was a very serious nuisance, and M was asserted ,that Mr. J. Doyle, the chief sanitary inspector, utterly failed in his duty in the matter. " A scandalous state of affairs has been allowed to grow lip," declared one councillor. Councillor Shirtcliffe said that forty-eight hours' notice had been given to the owners of the premises to have the nuisance done away with. Tne Mayor said that up "to the Ist April last year " these things " were not prohibited in Melrose. That was a point to be considered. He did not know whether action could be tafcen for its continuance. The report was adopted, with an addition suggested by Mr. M'Laren, to the effect that the chief sanitary inspector be called upon for an explanation of tho matter.
