Amid hearty cheers, the Dominion House of Commons unanimously decided t) accept a gift by Lord Strathcona, the High Commissioner, of £50,000 for the encouragement of physical and military training in the public schools of Canada. The sum of £2000 annually is to be devoted to this purpose. Donald Alexander Smith, first Baron Strathcona, was born in Scotland in 1820, and went to Canada at an early age, entering the service of tlie Hudson Bay Company. He quickly pushed his way to the I rent ; entered politics, becrme Governor of the Hudsou Bay Company and director of the Bpnk of Montreal, of the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway, and of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He became High Commissioner lor Canada in 1896. Lord Strathcona has given large sums of money for charitable and other purposes.
