SPACE FOR WOOL.
ACTION OF THE HARBOUR BOARD. Storehouses along the water front for the "golden fleeco" are admitted to bo inadequate, and members of the Harbour Board have thcreforo given much time to discussing Bchemes for securing more space. A committee appointed to study the fcubject reported yesterday that it could not deoide between two alternative- schemes of wool accommodation, and therefore referred matters to the board for its determination. The shortage, explained tho board's chairman, Mr. T. M." Wilford, amounted to 400,000 cubic feet. He suggested that a building of twice the size of Iho late J shed should be erected on tho J site. Such a structure in brick, in two stories, would cost £15,000, but it would not be ready by next October (tho next wool season). Tho idea was to use one story for the storage of wool and the, other for wool sales and 'other operations incidental to this traffic. 4nother proposal was that a temporary shed, twice the J sizo, could be erected in time for the next wool season on the reclamation by the King's Wharf for £6000, and the equipment (including two preastire) could be put in for £3000. The temporary shed it was estimated would be good for ten or twelve years, and the second-hand material would then. "bring in something. Mr. Wilford mentioned that if a temporary shed was built, the proposal for the construction of a new shed (in addition to the one proposed for the J site), for which the plans arc ready, estimated to cost £*5,000, could be delayed for three years, and thus standing charges— interest, depreciation, and so on, totalling £3500 a year — on that amount could be saved. Mr. Wilford moved that tho board should decide to set up a temi porary shed, and should, as soon as possible, put up a permanent structure on the J site. After much discussion the motion was amended, at tho suggestion of Mr. R. Fletcher, to omit provision for a temporary structure, and tho amendment was carried.
