BRITISH OLD AGE PENSIONS.
ESTIMATES FOR COMING YEAR. By Telegraph.— Frees Association.— Copyright. (Received March 11, 8.15 a.m.) LONDON, 10th March. The Estimates for the coming year include £8,750,000 for old age pensions. In February Mr. C. E. Hobhouse, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury, made the announcement that nine million pounds for old age pensions must be found during the coming year. Speaking in the House of Commons a few days ago, Mr. D. Lloyd-George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that Mr. Asquith, misled by the New Zealand precedent, was wrong in assuming the proportion of pensioners to population who would not put in claims during the first year. Otherwise his forecasts has been generally sound. He added that unless the pauper disqualifications were soon removed the pensions would involve an expenditure of £11,000,000.
