OUR DEFENCE FORCES.

EASTER MANOEUVRES. Through the courtesy of Messrs. Gaisford, Bartgill, and Knight, the officer commanding the district has been able to secure an area of country for the Easter volunteer manoeuvres. It is situated at Oringi, between Woodville and Dannevirke, and is reported to be eminently adapted to the purpose. It is in a central position, on which the troops can easily converge, being served by the railway from Napier, New Plymouth, and Wellington. It is anticipated that a large number of volunteers ml 1 take part in the manoeuvres, and every endeavour is being put forward f> n.j.ke them of a highly instructive nat'ivc. so that next year manoeuvres on a large scale, with two opposing forces, may take place. As the result of this year's camp, it is expected that the troops taking part will bo better trained in the work of supply, transport, and protection, so essential to a mobile force. The troops this year will act as a column providing its own protection, and it will be run entirely by the district staff. The operations will include field firing by the field artillery and small arms. The men are to go into camp on 9th April, and stay there till the 12th. Special arrangements are being made for the training of Defence Rifle Clubs at Easter. They will be mobilised at | three centres— Te Autc, Palmerston North, and Wanganui — and each club will attend at the centre nearest to its headquarters. The men will be trained in field firing, musketry, and extended order movements. The period of train- , ing .will be two days, and to all hands billeting allowances will be granted. The miner at the battery Was suffering from a cold! As mad as any liatter, lie Was pocketing the sold ! "Good gracious!" naid the manager, "But this is pretty pure." The miner said : "Excuse me, I Took J»nfc a little bit to buy j Borao Woodb' Qro&t Peppermint Cure." i — Advt,
