SWIMMING CONTROL.

« A MEETING IN TIMARU. [B2 TELEGBAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] TIMARU, This\ Day. A conference of delegates representing the Wellington, Auckland, Canterbury, South Canterbury, and Hawkes Bay centies of the Amateur Swimming Ab- | sociation was held last evening. Mr. Gcorje Harris--, piesident of th' v council, was present, and was nominated to the chair He said he must decline to attend the meeting m any other capacity than chairman, and as he considered the conference a vciy ini-. proper onu, wha-it there was a wntjollmg authority already in existence, he could not associate himself with it. Ho then retired, and Air. Ludwig, piesident of the Wellington centre, vsas voted to the chair. Mr. Ltidwig pointed out that it was not at all universal for delegates of .bodies affiliated to one. association to meet in. conference apart from the association. A long discussion took place on the method oi allocation of the Government grant of £200, dissatisfaction being expressed with the present system of apportioning £100 to humane work, and £100 to the competitive branch, of which only £30 waj» left for the centres after the provision for championship medals, school medals, and certificates. It was recommended that a larger share of the grant be to 4he competitive than to the humane branch. A suggestion that the council should hold moneys available for dis tribution. as a fund for the encouragement of swimming clubs and assisting. in the construction of baths was favourably discussed. It was decided to request the centre to consider what minimum number of clubs should constitute a centre, the opinion being expressed that it was not right for one club to form a centre. An Auckland proposition — that the championship meetings should extend over at least three days, with at least one day's interval between each day's racing — was lost. It was agreed to make the conference an annual one, arrangements to be made by the centre holding the championship.
