OBITUARY.
♦ . BARON BURTON. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Cop/right. (Received February 3, 8.15 a.m.) LONDON, 2nd February. The death of Lord Burton is announced. His Lordship succumbed after an operation for an internal complaint. Michael Arthur Bass, first Baron Burton, Avas a director of Bass and Co., Limited, of breAving fame, • and also of the South-Eastern RailAvay Company. He Avas born in 1837, being a son of Mr. Michael Bass, M.P., and married, in 1869, the fourth daughter of Mr. EdAvard ThorneAvill, Dove Cliff, Staffordshire, by Avhom he had one daughter. He Avas educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge (M.A.). A Liberal in politics, from 1865 to 1858 he sat in the House of Commons as member for Stafford, from 1868 to 1885 for East Staffordshire, and in 1885-86 for the Burton Division of Staffordshire. He Avas made a baronet in 1882, and a baron in 1886. The heir to the peerage (under special remainder) is the Hon. Mrs. Baillie, his daughter, and the heir to the baropetcy (also under special remainder) his nepheAv, William Arthur Hamar.
