William Simpkins was found wandering aimlessly about the road at Ngahauranga last night by the police. "He was charged with drunkenness at the Magistrate's Court this morning, but was in such a helpless state that Mr. Riddell, S.M., remanded him for a week for medical treatment. James Stevenson, on remand since 26th January on a charge of inebriety, was convicted and ordreed to pay 17s 6d medical expenses, or in default undergo 48 hours' imprisonment. James Wilson, alias Henry, who was found intoxicated in Taranakistreefc last night, was convicted and fined 20s, with an alternative of a week in gaol. Two separate charges were preferred against David Herbert Carvosso, alias H. Carver, at the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. W. G. Riddell. The first charge alleged that on 16th November, 1808, at Bunnythorpc,, he obtained from G. T. Witt the sum of 14s by means of a valueless cheque. The second referred to an offence alleged to have been committed two days later, when he obtained from the same source 17s 6d by similar methods. Accused, who pleaded guilty, had been staying at Wilt's hotel, in Bunnythoipe, and while there (stated Chief-Detective M'Grath), he borrowed 6s from the puulican. He afterwards gave a cheque, drawn by himself on the Bank of New Zealand at Levin, in payment, and received 14s as change A couple of days later he similarly tendered another cheque for £1 to defray the cost of drinks. Fiom this he was given 17s 6d change. He had no account *at the Bank of New Zealand.
