WELLINGTON FRENCH CLUB.

The .first meeting of the French Club was 'held last evening at the Geisha Tea Rooms. There was a good attendance" of members. Mr. W. B. Hudson presided, and welcomed the members. He explained what had ' peen done to make the meetings interesting, and gave a resume of the programme. Captain Baa'clay then gave his . lecture, "Les Salons de Pari6." These salons, which IWok the place of the press, were frequented by poets, artists, and men of letters. He took the Salon de Madame Geoffrin as a concrete example, and gave a sketch of the career of Madame Geoffrin. The lecture, which was very interesting, was listened to with great attention, and the lecturer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Madame Bouteau .read an extract dealing with Voltaire, 'and a successful meeting came to a close.
