WELLINGTON CUP MEETING.

«. TRENTHAM NOTES. TPIIS MORNING'S GALLOPS. This morning's gallops at Trentham were accomplished under the most unpleasant conditions. A sou-wester blustered, whilst at intervals the rain took up the running. Ihe course propei was in use, the horses galloping well towards the outer rails all the way. Tha going was holding, but better than might have been expected after the night's heavy downpour. The first to work were Husbandman (Chapman) and Sunbonnet (M'Grath). It was intended to give them a mile and a quarter gallop, but they went about a furlong further. Husbandman covered considerably more ground than did the mare, but aided by his light weight the Derby colt should have been closer than he was at the finish. Sunbonnet took 2min 27sec over once round, which is probably 100 yards more than a mile and a quarter. Goldbeater, a good cut of a sprinter, moved freely in a mile bout with Glejicullocli, and Sharpshooter was alongside Broadsword at the end of five furlongs, run in lmin ssec. Flitaway, who revelled in the soft going, led Tumut by a clear length in the first half of a similar journey, but the latter got on terms in tho straight, and the pair finished together in lmin 4£sec. Moloch, atter going two turlongs, had Osiris to bring him along from the mile post, and the Cup horse ran the mile and a quarter in 2mm 21seu, the last seven in lmin 39iscc. Artillerie (Hatch) and Sir Frisco (Andrews) ran once round.. The little- bay horse was on the outside all the way, and if anything appeared to hold the Oaks winner at the finish. The watch recorded 2min 23sec for the journey. M'Combe will have the mount on. Sir Frisco in the Cup. Iranui, after trotting, galloped a mile in lmin 56sec, which she could have bettered had her rider desired. Wharekura had a slight advantage of Effort over five furlongs, covered in lmin 6sec. Armlet ran clean away from Miss Mischief in a six furlongs go, run in lmin 19sec. San Fernando shaped pleasingly over six furlongs. Wailetha started off with the chestnut, but quickly dropped astern, and is not in her Avinter iorni by a long way. Prism ran a mile in lmin 54sec, moving with resolution. Mr. Lance Wood was present to see Ukraine gallop A" Red's sister hit out atrongly over 3ix furlongs, which she covered in the satisfactory time of lmm 204 sec. Llanwern in a like tusk equalled Ukraine's time. With a flying start, Ballarat scampered half a mile in 53sec. Useful work was allotted Kilwinmng, Applegarlh, Mernvonia, Knight Commander, Sweet Angelns (looking a lot better than in the spring), Lawn Rose, Truganini (big and well), Xavier, and Waxy. M'Laughlm''s trio, Maiora, Splash, and Rock Ferry, and M'Donald's and Pine's teams had not worked before breakfast. Yesterday, when running in a paddock adjoining W Davies's stables at Trentham, Landwern, a six-year-old brown horse by Stepniak from Leda, fractured his leg so badly that he had to be shot. This was a serious loss to Ins owner, W. Davies, who has had v bad run during the past season or two. jLiandwern was a useful little horse. As a four-year-old he won the C3.C. Heathcote Handicap, beating a numeious field, and the President's Handicap at Woodville. His best perKornj nee last aeabon was his third to California and Maharanuiin the Wellington R.C. Winter Oats, >vhilst early this season he nlled the same position behind Wailethe and Simplex at Iticcanon in the Heathcote Handicap.
