JOHN MACWHIRTER, R.A. jUiAR away to the west of Beauly, in the very heart of Invernessshire, lies a land' of enchantment, which for years has been annually made known to multitudes of the world's eyes by the facile brush of Mr. MacWhirter. All his delightful presentments of the varied charms of tho silver birch in her native home come from distant Glen Affarie. This is the real home of the silver birch, and it is here Mr. MacWhirter has made somo of his most delightful pictures. Birches there are by the thousand and tens of thousands, raising their graceful queenly heads in every variety of slender charm— young or old, slight or majestic, up and down tho slopes. Every tree is a picture with its gar- ■ den-like foreground, and its distant glimpses of river, loch, and hill. Few visitors to the Royal Academy exhibition of 1895 will have forgotten "Beauty and the Beast," where Mr. MacWhirter has contrasted to the airy delicate gracious birch, tho old, thick, dead, stunted trunk, with broken boughs and blasted head, which seems to stand by in hopeless admiration. You will bo delighted to possess an engraving of undisputed quality by this distinguished artist, and we have two subjects in stock — "Autumn in tho Isle of Arran," and "The Birch, the Rowan, and tho* Pine, with the Grampian Hills."
