FIRE AT CARTERTON.
SHOPS DESTROYED. f.Bx'TEiioiiArH.— Special to The Post.V CARTERTON, This Day. ; At 3 o'clock this morning a baker's assistant, on the road to work, saw smoke issuing from a block of buildings in High-street, Carterton, opposite the Marquis of Normanby Hotel. He rangthe firebell, and the brigade was prompt"ly on the spot with a full pressure of water. The fire originated in a smalU bicycle shop occupied by Mr. J. Chew,' which was completely destroyed, together with the contents. The adjoining shop 'of Mr. F. Meenkin, clothier t and dealer, was also destroyed, and the shop ot Mr. H. Cdtt, saddler, the conI tents beintr saved. The premises consisted of a one-stoiy building in throe "sections, a«jd were owned by Mr. W. Parker. The building was insured in the Phoenix office for £400 and the* stock for £400. Mr. Chew's stock of 1-icycles and sundries was insured., in the Alliance office for £100, the proposal only having been sent in on Saturday last. The premises of Mr. T. Foster, furniture, dealer and upholsterer ; H. H. Aimstrong, saddler ; lining and Churchill, tailois, were saved by the brigade, but wero considerably damaged, the contents being injured by water and nemoval. Everything was considered safe by 5' o'clock. T. Foster's stock and -the premises are insured m the New Zealand office. Two men, William Maidens and Alfred Lack, charged with being in possession of a still and with illegally manufacturing whisky, appeared before Mr. Burgess, S.M., yesterday. The former was fined £60, with the alternative of six months' imprisonment, 1 and Lack was fined £50, or six months, 'x'he case created a great amount of local interest.
