PERSONAL MATTERS.
c Mr. R. E. Hayes is gazetted to the position of Registrar of Incorporated Societies. The Minister for Public Works (Hon. R. M'Kenzie) returned from the Nelson district last night. Mr. J. F. C. M'Clelland, accountant, of Wellington, is gazetted an auditor under the Friendly Societies Act. The resignations of Mr. J. A. Gilruth, Chief Veterinarian, and Mr. G. Ross, Inspector of Dairies, are gazetted. Mr. Henry Kember, M.1. A., N.Z., is gazetted a member of the Board of the Government Advances to Settlers Office. Lieut. W. J. Shannon, 18th Lancers, is gazetted second aide-de-camp to His Excellency the Governor, in succession to Lieut. E. L. Lyon, 18th Hussars. Mr. Thome, who has been on the staff of the Post and Telegraph Office at the Thames for some time, has been appointed postmaster at Taumaranui. Lieut.-Col. W. E. Collins, of the New Zealand Medical Corps, has resigned his position as a member of the Military Pensions Board. Capt. C. M. Begg ha's been appointed a temporary member of the board. Mr. A. H. Johnstone, of the firm of Messrs. Malone, Anderson, and Johnstone, solicitors, New Plymouth and Stratford, is in Wellington at present, having just returned irom a holiday tour in the South. Mr. Bernard Smith, late secretary of the Wellington Law Students' Association, has severed his connection with the firm of Messrs. Martin and Atkinson, solicitors, and started in business as a solicitor in Picton. Mr. S. H. Smith, of the staff of Messrs. Turnbull, Hickson, and Gooder, was presented on Wednesday evening by the firm and his fellow-employees with a handsome marble clock on the occasion of his marriage. Mr. A. Burns, sen., who .was at one time connected with the press in va2'ious parts of the Dominion, and is now teacher of a native school in the Rotorua district, is at present in Wellington, accompanied by Mrs. Burns. Onr Masterton correspondent telegraphs that arrangements are being made to tender a public banquet to the Hon. A. W. Hogg, Minister for Labour and Customs. The banquet will probably take place in about ten days' time. Mr. W. £. Hudson, secretary of the Government Insurance Department, is gazetted Deputy Commissioner in succession to Mr. D. M. Luckie, who has retired on superannuation. Mr. Luckie has held the position for some thirty years, and Mr. Hudson has been in the service for over a quarter of a century. Mr. William Light, whose death at Dannevirke was announced yesterday, had been a resident of New Zealand for forty years. After being at sea for some years, he became a licensed victualler on Lambton-quay. He afterwards kept hotels at Wanganni, Feildmg, and Dannevirke. He has left a widow and two daughters. Mr. H Wakeley, who for the past eleven years has had charge of the fellmongery department of the Longburn Freezing Works, has been appointed to take charge of the fellmongery department of the Waitara Freezing Works. Mr. Wakeley was also wool-classing instructor at the Palmerston North Technical School. Supporters of Mr. J. Vigor Brown, M.P. for Napier, entertained him at a fete on the local recreation ground last night, the event being in honour of his election. The town bands played selections, and the attractions included an exhibition of kinematograph pictures. Congratulatory speeches were made by the Hon. A. W. Hogg, who represented the Government, and Mr. John Higgins, chairman of the entertainment committee. Mr. Hogg also read a cordial telegram from the Prime Minister, who spoke highly of Mr. Brown's energy and capacity, and welcomed him to the House of Representatives. About four thousand persons attended the fete, which was decidedly successful.
