A meeting convened by Mr. A. J. M'Curdy was held at Upper Hutt to consider the question of forming a salvage corps, fire police, and fire brigade for the district, between the Silverstream bridge and the Horseshoe Bend. It wa& decided to form a salvage corps to start with, and Messrs. A. Allan, P. D. Davis, J. J. Geange, A. K. Jowitt, G L. Lay, A. J. M'Curdy, G. E. Mansell. H. R. Pearson, and E. H. Palling were appointed an interim committee. Mr. 3d ' Curdy was elected chairpian, Mr. Pearson secretary, and Mr. Davis trcaburei. Sub-committees were appointed to ascertain information required, and it was decided to ask the Upper Hutt Town Board to provide a site for a station building, and to recommend the erection of one fire alarm tower at the town board office site and another at the old school site. It is understood that the roll to be used at the election of members of ths Tramway Board, on 2nd February, will contain more than 4000 names. The late Mr. W. Burt, victim of the tatal accident at Whiteman's Valley on Monday last, was buried at Taita yesterday. He is stated to have been the Hutt's Jast surviving member of the old Cavalry Corps of the troublous sixties. The appointment of Constablo D. Mahonej as Clerk of the Court at Upper Hutt is gazetted this week. The expenditure of the Qreymouth Harbour Board for the year 'ending 31st December, 1908, was £86,192 5s sd. Of this amount £34,071 10s Id was spent on harbour works and £32,741 5s 9d foi the new dredge JUawhora. The receipts for the iame period amounted lo £76,578 16s sd,thus leaving a debit balance of £9613 9s. For Bronchial Coughs take Woods' Gr..at Peppermint Cuie. Is 6d. — Advt.
