THE LORDS ANO THE MINES BILL. HOSTILE MOTION LOST. SECOND READING CARRIED. By Telegraph.— Presa Association.— Copyright. LONDON, 16th December. In the House of Lords, on the second reading of the Eight Hours in Mines Bill, Lord Newton moved an amendment that ths Bill be rejected. On a division being taken, the motion was lost, the voting being :—: — For the amendment ' ... 44 Against ... , 121 Majority against ... 77 The Bill was then read a second time. Lord Lansdowne (Unionist Leader in the House of Lords) expressed misgivings as to the- effects of the Bill, especially in the interest of consumers. Even a temporary embarrassment to the country's industries would be serious at a time like the present, when numbers of unemployed were walking the streets.
