A representative of one of tho laigesfc milling companies in Australia is at present visiting the Dominion with the object of opening up business in the flour trade. It is said that flour can be imported from Australia at about the same price as that being charged by the Millers' Association here, namely, £10 15s a ton. [PKESS ASSOCIATION.] DIVOIICE COL'HT. SCIENTIFIC EXCURSION. CHRISTCHURCH, 15th Dee. A party of twenty Ghristchureh gentlemen organisod by Messrs. T. D. Harman and R. Speight, M.A., leave the Bluff on Saturday night for a fortnight's cruise among the West Coast sounds in the steamer Rakiura. Amongst those included in the party will bo Dr. Farr and Messrs. Skey and 'Cook, who, if possible, will be landed at the Solanders to take magnetic observations to complete the magnetic survey of the Dominion which was commenced some years ago by Dr. Farr and Dr. Chilton, of Canterbury College. Dr. B. M. Moorhouse (Canterbury Acclimatisation Society) and E. R. Waite, Curator of Canterbury Museum, will also accompany the party. Half of the party intend to proceed from Alilford via Te Anau and Manapouri, the Spey river track and Wilmot River Pass to Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound, where the Rakiura will pick them up. A visit will be paid to the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island. DAMAGES FOE, SINKING A KETCH. AUCKLAND, 15th December. The rehearing of the action by the Northern Coal Company against the Union Steamship Company for £1940 damages in connection with the sinking of the ketch Moonah by collision with the defendant company's steamer Wairuna, on the night of 10th March last, waa concluded to-day. The jury returned a unanimous verdict for plaintiffs, costs being awarded for the second trial on the highest scale. The Judge deferred his decision in regard to the application for the costs for the first trial, at which the jury disagreed. SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. CHRISTCHURCH, 15th Dec. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur S\yimming Association, the championships for 1909 were awarded to South Canterbury. It was decided not to send a team to Australia to compete for the Australasian championships. ARBITRATION COURT RULING. TIMARU, 15th December. At the Arbitration Court to-day it was ruled that painting gates or fences by a farm hand at farm wages was not an infringement of tho painters' award, but the court held that painting a stable was a breach. TOM LONG KILLED. WANGANUI, 15th December. Tom Long, the hangman, was killed while felling bush at Kauangaroa today. An inquest is to be held. FIRE AT A PRIVATE HOSPITAL. TIMARU, 15th December. Dr. J.
