SUBURBAN COUNCILS.
PETONE BOROUGH. Last evening's meeting of tho Petono Borough Council was attended by tho Mayor (Mr. M'Ewan) and Councillors Lodder, Short. Colos, Castle, Colquhoun, Young, and Smith. One case of ecarlet fever was notified. Mr. Cavanagh, Kaiwarra, applied for a refund of hau\ 1.40 poundage money (£l2) which he had paid to the poundkeeper on wandoring cattle during the winter months on tho grounds that his landlord had failed to fenco hia laiid. It was decided to point out to the writer that tho council had no power to do aa requested. Pormißßion vas granted tho Hutt Valley Trotting Club to use tho recreation ground 'on .ho 26th and 28th December *fc a fee of £25 for two days. Tho application of tho Korokoro lamplighter for increased' wages to the extent 'of b<i por /nonlh on account of 'his having 1 to light two additional lamps was acceded to. •T. Sharpe intimated that ho would hold tho council liable for all damage to grays' ing by reason of carting across paddocks, etc., in connection with tho sinking of the trial lioln for tho eastern drainage scheme. Tho letter was merely received. It was decided to enter into. a five- years' •groement with tho Railway Department to supply wator at the rate of £200 per annum, with a stipulation- lo the effect that tho wator is only to be drawn off a 2-inch main. Mr. Greenfield, _ owner of a- section adjoining tho council's land at Maungaraki, wToto isking that he nhould bo given a contract for fencing half of tho boundary fenf^e (some 22 chains) at £1 per chain. Tho offer was accepted. 1 In reference to the 'KibblowMte subdivision, the council agreed to the formation of the road conditional upon the drainage being carried out in accordance with the engineer's instruotiono ; and further, that the applicant put down a proper culvert right across the full width of the street. * The council decided to take no auction in reference to the request for assistance from the Hutt Park Committee in regard Ito its proposed appeal against the recent decision of the Supreme Court making the committee liable to the extent of £70 for the bill of costs of Messrs. Stafford and Treadwell, incurred by the late trustees.
