- 1 m SEQUEL TO RECENT RAID. TRANSGRESSORS FINED. "Guilty" was the plea of all the seven defendants, John, Russell, Charles M'Culley, Robert Henderson, Leslie Short, Christopher Seal, Samuel Staunton, and Henry Kenway, charged before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-day with playing the unlawful game of "two-up" on the breastwork of th© Wellington Harbour Board. Station-Sergeant Darby detailed the cricumstancee. For some time past a school of men employed about- the wharf had been in the habit of congregating down by the Sailors' R-est and ia other parts of the breastwork in attitudes that lent credence to the suspicion) that they were playing "two-up."' Two constables wev© detailed, in pfain- clothea to watch proceedings. On the 10th December they went among tfcem, and saw the game played, and as a result the arrests were made. On account of the difficulty of detection the game had been very hardto suppress. The defendants had, had every opportunity of discontinuing the practice. MAGISTRATE'S DECISION. Hi£ Worship said that the Jegfalkture of New Zealand had left one form df gambling open, but otjher games were subiect to penalties. 1 Each defendant would be fined £3 apd costs* 7s, in deiauit seven days' imprisonment. No time was allowed for payment.
