CYCLING UNDER DIFFICULTIES.
[BT TELEGRAPH — VRES3 ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, 13th December. The first cyclinpr road race of tho season, promoted by the Christohurch Cycling and Motor Club, Ltd., under the new rulos promulgated by the League of New Zealand Wheelmen, took place this afternoon, the selected route being from the junction of tho Yaldhurst and Ricearton Racecoui'Mj Roada to Leeslon and back, a distance of approximately fifty miles. Excellent entries had boon received for the event, and the scratchings at the itart were remarkably few, the renult beins? a fine turnout of competitors The race was, hqwevor, by no moans a tour of pleasure. The roads in places was badly cut up, so much f>o that several riders sustained such bad falls as to compel them to retiie from the race. Furthermore, at intervals along tho route, nails aud tacks had been sprinkled, presumably as a mark of protest apainst tho holding of tho race in the locality, the result being a very large number of tyro troubles, and, to add to the other misfortunes of the competitors, each on arrival home had his name taken by a police officer, the object btaled being to proceed against the men for furious riding along a public road. Pieoaskie 11, E. Wall 12. The fastest actual riding 1 times wore — J. Tozer, 2 hours Bmin. ZBsec. ; H. Gnlletly. 2 hours Bmin. 28sec. ; A. Smith, 2 hours 9min. 20sec.
