EASTBOURNE BOROUGH.

The Lastbourne Borough Council met on Saturday night, tiicro being present : lJie Mayor (Mr. F. G. BoltonVCouncHlors, Robertson, Bannatyne, Foley MacKenzic, M'Keegan, and Shortt : also the iown Clark (Mr. J. D. Avery). A request ±or co-operation in the matter of remedying the position created by the resumption by the Crown of lands from which revenues were derived by local bodies was received from Petone Borough Council. It was resolved to express sympathy with the council in question, and also to expicss the hope that it would succeed in its action to have the matters and difference set right The report of the works committee was brought np, and approved on the following terms :— With the reduced staft good work has been done since the previous council meeting. The Orua road extension work was taken in hand and is now almost completed. The work at Nikau -street has been carried out as directed. Tuutora-road, Puriri, Villeneuve, and Ngaie street! have been finished, thus completing the private streets. Ihe foreman will now be able to carry out any minor works that may be necessary. In connection with the maintenance of the main road, he recommends that some attention be given to the northern portion from Rocky Point to the borough boundary at Day's Bay 1 his is getting into a bad state, and should be put m order during the summer season. The foreman points out the necessity for water tables along this portion of the road. It is further recommended that the footpath on the southern side of Fabian-street be constructed from Orua-road corner to the Harbour Board waiting shed, thus giving a finished appearance to Fabian-street, besides meeting a growing requirement. If the works mentioned herein are approved they together with maintenance work, will be sufficient to keep the prtesent small staif engaged for the next^month. It was resolved to make a contribution to the Hutt Park on a valuation basis. Among other works resolved on was the appointment of a sub-committee to report fully on the lighting of the borough ; to in&tilute a weekly sanitary service for permanent residents ; also to lake proceedings for the recovery of outstanding rates. A complaint from Miss M. Anketell was received with respect to the use of second-hand timber in dwellings. A sub-committee was appointed to interview the Health Department on the subject of the use of second-hand timber in erection of dwelling houses. A permit for the election of a second dwelling on his section was refused to Mr. C. H. Pulsford. The financial statement showed that the district fund was in debit to the extent of £513 8s sd, but there was a balance shown of £150 assets over liabilities.
