Further details of the accident which occurred at the Clarence siding, in the Blue Mountains — a portion of a goods train breaking away and colliding with another goods train — show that the passengers had a miraculous escape. The runaway train dashed down a grade of one in forty at a terrific pace. The passenger cars were at the end of the train, and became foremost on the mad rush downwards. When the breakaway occurred, the derailment of waggons following the passenger car stayed its onward progress and saved the lives of the passengers. The train was laden with copper, wool, and chaff. The wool burned fiercely. When the fire broke out hundreds of men were working on a deviation of the line, and they threw earth on the fire and extinguished it. Coetollo, the guard, lini died ot his injurie*.
