"'NAPOLEON." By W. Q. ORCHARDSON, R.A. This work, which was considered at tha time to be perhaps the finest picture in, i the Royal Academy of 1880, represents tho exiled Emperor taking his last long look at Franco. In the uniform which is peculiarly associated with him, he stands apart from his suite on the deck of H.M.S. Bellorophon, 3rd July, 1815, off Capo Ushant. To the left, at a respectful disI lance, and bareheaded, aro his officers, Col. Planat, General Montholon, Chirgn. Maigaul, Cto. Las Cases (whose son is leaning over the rail in the mid-distance), I and Gonora.l Savery, General Lallemand, and General Bcrtrand This is one of tho few examples of an open air subject by Mr. Orchardson, who selects more often tho interior of a spacious salon with ample space of empty floor. That feature, a peculiar characteristic of his work, is present here, and is moro than ever valuable in detaching the hero from hig surroundings. The loneliness of tho great warrior is emphasised by this isolation, to the advantage of the picture as a composition and tho dramatic force of tho incident. Tbe Alight roll of the vessel, indicated by tho line of the masts, explains the poso of tho Emperor, and BUffgests thomovement of tho ship, a suggestion which is also greatly helped by tho diagonal lines of tho Bhip't> rigging. The straightforward story-telling, with no comment, no "touching" incidents, and no confupion, is another feature of tho artist's work. I Hero is Napoleon taking his last look at I France. Your attention is not called avray j by any conflicting motives. i The work was purchased for £2000 under | tho terms of the Chantrey Bequest, whenceit has boon reproduced by permission of tho artist and tho President and Council of the Royal Academy. It is now hung at tho Tato Gallery with tho rest of the Chantrey Pictures. A largo beautifully framed engraving of this picture is on view in the Showrooms of Messrs. R. and E.
