YORKSHIRE SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The thirteenth annual meeting of tho Yorkshire Society was held in Godber's Rooms, Cuba-street, last evening, Mr. J. 11. Helliwell in the chair. There was a good attendance. The annual report, which was adopted, stated that the finances of the society wero in a satisfactory condition, the . balance in hand showing an advance of £6 3s 8d over last year. The only unsatisfactory feature was the comparatively large number of outstanding subscriptions. Tho committee was pleased to report that very fow applications had been made on tho funds of the society by distressed York shirernen, and the total amount disbursed in that way during the year was £2 12a The annual monthly meetings had been regularly held throughout the year, but the attendance of members, although on a few occasions excellent, had not been consistently good. With tho view of securing an improvement in that respect, a series of fortnightly sooial . evenings was instituted, but with only fair success, and the committee did not feel justified in recommending their continuance. It, howevetj felt that if the society was to realise its importance to Yorkshiremen as a means of pleasurable social intercourse and mutual help, it could not too strongly impress and urge upon the members tho necessity of regular_ attendance. The success of the committee's endeavours to provide wholesome and onjoyable. meetings depended largely on the personal assistance that all could render in that respect, and it asked tho co-operation of every member so that the society might regain the flourishing position it formerly occupied. During the year 19 new members had been elected to tho society, and 16 removed from the list of members, leaving the total membership 84, in addition to 11 life members. The balance-sheet, which was also adopted, showed that the receipts had amounted to £110 Is lid, including a balance of £40 9s 3d, from the previous year. The expenditure was £63 93, leaving a balance in hand of £46 12s lid. The assets are valued at £63 15s sd, and there are no liabilities. Officers wero elected as follow: — President, Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. ; vicepresidents, Messrs. T. H. Hustwick, T. H. Coltman, and A. H. Thompson; hon. secretary, Mr. H. Wilcock; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. A. Harris; committee, Messrs. J. Flockton, N. J. Bennington, W. S. Bedford, G. T. Hall, A. H! Harbottle, J. Trevor, and U. Parkin; auditors, Messrs. J. H. Holliwell and W. W. Dalby. Mr. J. A. Harris,. the retiring secretary, said that in the Yorkshire Society in Sydney women wore admitted, and he thought the idea was a very good one. Tho Sydney society also had a rifle club and a choral union. He suggested that the new committee should consider the question of making the Wellington tociety more attractive. It was decided that the committee should arrange for musical evening 3 during^ the year. The retiring- officers w ere thanked for their services. A hearty welcome was given to Mr. Taylor, a recent arrival from Yorkshire.
