The Standard states that Lord Kitchener will shortly be created a FieldMarshal, and gh'en the task of cooperating with the colonies iv consolidating all the land forces of the Empire- [ into a homogeneous army, and giving it a plan of mobilisation in the event of war. ; Viscount Kitchener, G.C.8., 0.M., K.C.M.G., has been ■ Commander-in-Chief iv India since 1902. He ie the eldest son of the late Colonel Kitchener, and, educated at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, entered the army in 1871. His work in the Soudan and South Africa earned for him great distinction, and his talent as an organiser has been enhanced by what he has accomplished in India. On the retirement of Lord Roberts from the command in South. Africa to take up the duties of Commander-in-Chief of the British army, his lord&hip placed on record the following appreciation of Lord Kitchener : — "General Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, G.C.8., K.C.M.G., R.E., has, as my Chief of the Staff, rendered me unfailing and, very loyal support, and I am greatly indebted to him for the valuable assistance he at all times afforded me. Ho- has held a difficult position, and he has discharged its duties with conspicuous ability. I left 'the command of the' Army ir- South Africa to my late Chief of the Staff with the utmost confidence that he would do al) that man could do to bring the present phase of the war to a speedy conclusion."
