EDUCATION BILL
ASSENT TO ITS WITHDRAWAL. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. LONDON, Bth December. The House of Commons has given its assent to the withdrawal of the Education Bill. Mr. Asquith, the Prime Minister, remaiked that the correspondence explained the position, and he agreed that a chance of settlement did not at present exist. He expressed his deep personal disappointment at the breakdown of the compromise negotiations, and his admiration of the strenuous, patient, and indomitable efforts made by Mr. Runciman, President of the Board of Education, and also of the peacemakers upon both sides. Mr. Asquith designated the Primate "the great Archbishop." Mr. Balfour said that he recognised Mr. Asquith's sincerity, but criticised the attempt to rush through a Bill which contained in black and white only what the Church was called upon to relinquish and left open until the end what she would receive.
