THE AWAKENING OF GALATEA A MAGNIFICENT WORK OF ART. [ ! All desirous of viewing this work oi I art can do so by calling at Messrs. R. and E. Tingfey's showrooms, Manners Street, who have only a limited number for sale. The story of Pygmalion and Galatea has maintained its charm since the classic days of mythology. The theme has ever been a favourite one with both author and artist; by the latter, however, it has never been more beautifully and ably expressed than in the admirable picture from the facile brush of Mr. Herbert Schmalz. We were shown yesterday by Messrs. R. & E. T'ingey a fine facsimile of the above,^nd it is indeed a work of art. The story runs that Pygmalion, the great sculptor of Cyprus, became deeply enamoured, of the statue of a maiden which he himself had fashioned. It represented to him the absolute ideal of womanhood, and his infatuation was such that he prayed to Venus to give the image life. His prayer was answered, and in the wonderful colouring of this beautiful picture we see the gradual mysterious transformation of the cold marble into warm living beauty. The picture is attracting universal admiration in the galleries of the Royal Academy, and the facsimile reproduction faithfully embodies the feeling and expression of the artist. The picture will undoubtedly at once rank as a masterpiece, and an unprecedented success for this exquisite facsimile is assured.
