"PAWNING A PENSION?"

The statement made by an old age pensioner to the trustees of the Benevolent Institution yesterday, with respect to his pension being held as security for a loan, has attracted the attention of the Pensions Department. The pensioner's statement that his pension was held as security for a lean of £1 is flatly denied. The transfer, it is pointed out, could not be effected without knowledge- of the Department, whose authority would first be required. The old man stated that he had not been able to get his pension paper sinco June, as he could not pay the loan for which it was held as security. To this the Department reply that the pension in question was drawn up to 30th November last by the old man nimself.
