THE ROSE SHOW. DECORATED TABLE COMPETITION.
LIST OF AWARDS. At the Rose Show last evening the Town Hall was crowded with people who thoroughly enjoyed the brilliant floral display. The scene, viewed from tho gallery, seemed an cver-changiug pageant of beauty and colour. The bright dresses, the flower bedecked hats moving amidst the splendid blossoms completed a- scene of loveliness. During the evening a promenade concert was neld. My. Reg. Blow sang "The Valley by the Sea," Miss Marsh "Rory JDarlin'," 'Mr. E. J. Hill "Rosalie," and Mr. E. Archer "Let me like a soldier fall." All the singers were heartily applauded. A string band played selections during th 9 evening. The results of the public voting on the competition for the best decorated table were us follow : — Votes. Prize. 1. .Mrs. C. W. Tnngnam... 507 30s 2. Mrs. J. Duthie 306 15s 3. Mrs. Stanley Hume ... 167 7s 6d Mrs. Chatfield was awarded the special prize of 5s for the best shower or bridal bouquet ; Mrs. H. F. Ayson cam© second. In the miscellaneous section Mr. H. A. Fox secured the half-guinea special prize- for his exhibit of pelargoniums. Mr. G. C. Holder, for his fine exhibit of sweet peas, won the special prize, value 10& od, awarded by Messrs. Beadnail and Son for that section. Among the features of the show was a very fine exhibit by Messrs. Whiteman of some beautiful roses on a separate table. The following is a complete list of prize-winners : — ROSES. Open Section. CHAMPION ROSE! BLOOM. Mrs. J. G. Wilson won tho National Rose Society's silver meda.' for displaying the champion rose bloom. CARNATIONS. In the • open section (grown in theopen) G. J. W. Harvey won two first prizes, for three blooms of perpetuals and three blooms of Malmaisons. There were no entries for any other classes. Amateur Section. Three blooms, eelfs, any colour — Mrs. W. J. Thompson. Three blooms, fancies other than yellow or buff ground (certificate) — Olive Spilman. In this section some o? the classes failed to receive an award, and Messrs. Laird's special prize and H. A. Fox's special prize were not won. Novice Section. In this section, which was poorly represented, J. B. BESI DECORATED TABLE. In tho ladies' section the best decorated table (judged by ballot) was won by Mrs. Tringham (roses), 570 votes. Mrs. j. Duthie was second (carnations) and Mrs. Stanley Hume third. Thb committee deserve a word of praise for the exceptionally yood show, which was conducted without a hitch. Mr. H. A. Fox was the secretary, and his position was no sinecuie. The judging was 'done by Mr. J. G. Davis (Christchurch)
