RECRIMINATIONS.
THE PREMIER AND MR. MASSEY. Mr. Massey (Leader of the Opposition) appears to still believe that the Go\ernment's electioneering tactics werevery reprehensible, and he has applied the adjectives "dirty" and "dirtiest" to piocedure which, he alleges, had tho Government's sanction. Sir Joseph biames the Opposition for misrepresenting the Government ; each side claims that the other 1 has not fairly played the game. One of Mr. Massey's complaints was that a pamphlet, circulated by the Ministerial party, cast reflections on the memory of Sir Harry Atkinson. The publication contained schedules of wages paid upon relief works during a time of distress for which, contends Mr: Massey, the Liberal Government which preceded Sir Harry Atkinson was responsible. Sir Joseph Ward denies that he has done anything, direct or indirect, to injure the memory of Sir Harry Atkinson. He did not authorise or circulate any pamphlet calculated to bring discredit upon the memory of a statesman who had his high admiration and personal respect. The Premier submits that all he did in this matter was in a manifesto, which he delivered prior to the elections. In this announcement he merely referred to the rates of pay under a Conservative Government m 1887, and he contends that it is perfectly justifiable to refer to records' of fact connected with any Governments of the past.
Referring to competitions for Government grants for the encouragement of rifle-shooting, the Wellington District Office notifies that the competitions to be arranged by the local rifle associations will be limited to the £100 open to the public. No special competition^ will therefore be necessary for this amount. Firing by Wanganui Collegiate School, in the competition for the Schools of the Empire Rifle Cup, took place last Monday, and the good aggregate of 494 out of a possible 560 was compiled. This i 6 four points more than last year's winning total. .Wellington College has pot yet fired.
